It’s time again to visit our annual tech trade fair organised by the NCB – Infotech.

DSCN0664_2

Orange Expo?

DSCN0660_2

Before entering SVCC, one thing you’ll notice is this Great Wall being built.

DSCN0804_2

Actually, it’s the Port Louis Ring Road.

DSCN0665_2

At the entrance of the Conference Centre, there were two donation boxes to collect money for the Pakistan flood victims.

DSCN0777_2

DSCN0669_2

Going in, there’s the Career area on the right.

DSCN0670_2

Avatar area on the left. :p

DSCN0671_2

12 screens joined together at the reception.

DSCN0674_2

DSCN0675_2

Finally we enter the big bazaar. Here, the eShop stand & the huge Cash & Carry stand.

Cash & Carry

DSCN0676_2

With every Infotech, Cash & Carry seizes the opportunity to offer discounts on a huge variety of gadgets, including laptops.

DSCN0680_2

Taking a self-portrait. :)

DSCN0681_2

More laptops & LCD monitors.

DSCN0682_2

Nokia N97, X6, 5800… all class-B smartphones.

DSCN0684_2

Nikon S8000, L21 & L22. No DSLRs. :D

DSCN0690_2

DSCN0689_2

Aha! 3D on a Samsung LED TV. After trying out the glasses (Rs 9k a pair), I’m still unconvinced. 3D lacks the depth of real-world objects. & when you focus on one point of the screen, the other areas lose the 3D effect. To conclude, it’s a marketing gimmick & a head-ache.

DSCN0720_2

DSCN0730_2

Coming to back to TVs, it seems Cash & Carry have pulled out all the stops to promote their HDTVs.

DSCN0731_2

DSCN0733_2

The public was definitely wooed.

DSCN0760_2

Cash & Carry’s “iMax” lineup. :p

DSCN0743_2

DSCN0744_2

40” Samsung LED TV. These LED-backlit TVs provide better contrast, greater viewing angles & incredible thinness… at not-so-affordable price.

HM Rawat

DSCN0697_2

At the Rawat stand, I saw this.

DSCN0698_2

DSCN0699_2

Magnification via a microscope of the internal circuit of a phone.

Galaxy

DSCN0750_2

The Rs 80k Asus 3D laptop. Another gimmick.

DSCN0704_2

The Rs 110k 46” Samsung LED TV. :)

eShop

DSCN0706_2

DSCN0708_2

More self-portraits… this time with a touchscreen MSI Wind Top.

DSCN0711_2

Macbooks.

DSCN0719_2

Magic Mouse, an ergonomic nightmare.

DSCN0712_2

DSCN0718_2

& the iPad, an over-sized iPod Touch. No hands-on, no demo. At least, it’s turned on, better than Courts’ Rs 40k "64MB" dead iPad.

DSCN0728_2

….

Courts

DSCN0761_2

The Super AMOLEDs Samsung Wave & Jet.

DSCN0762_2

The Motorola Droid Milestone.

DSCN0763_2

Canon EOS 450D, which has been succeeded by the 500D, which has been succeeded by the 550D. Oh well…

DSCN0764_2

DSCN0765_2

Nintendo Wii & XBOX 360. This reminds me that I’ve never played with a console… :|

DSCN0757_2

MBC stand with Sam Amigan & co.

DSCN0758_2

Radioplus stand with Guillaume.

Interactive Whiteboard

DSCN0770_2

DSCN0773_2

Basically, it’s a finger tracker which then allows interactivity with the OS – like a huge touchscreen.

Orange

DSCN0740_2

This is the Tabbee, a crablet (short for crap tablet).

DSCN0774_2

The Samsung Wave. The Super AMOLED screen is awesome, but Bada OS is a joke, a copycat.

Emtel

DSCN0726_2

DSCN0736_2

As always, Emtel have the most innovative stand. I wish their products were the same.

 DSCN0748_2

& the over-hyped Emtel girls…

To conclude, zero innovation, zero new technologies, gadgets that are 6 months (or years) old & very few product demos & hands-on. That said, if you are looking to buy something, Infotech might be the perfect place to get bargains (assuming that you haven’t already found it cheaper online). Otherwise, Infotech is just a place for window shopping. Duh!

Agree with you that the Emtel babes are way over-hyped! :D

The nokia X6 at 10k! :O Thats nice!!!

But is this a tradefair? or is it infotech? Perhaps missier le ministre should read this article. All those publicity they made of the ipad being there, and its just in vitrine , and turned on? (did you check if it was a real ipad or just a printed glowing page? ) I can see that on my PC screen too!

What more INNOVATION was there?

is it too much to ask for? Perhaps Microsoft Kinect Demo?
3D Gaming Experience? Latest Phones!!!!(nokia c6.. damn... i'm still waiting). Norton? wtf?

What part of the tour showed that mauritius was " INTELLIGENT MAURITIUS ".

To the 'honorable' minister of techno, please, do not mock us ,IT-people, just say its an Electronics Mega Trade Fair 2010.

Yashvin said...

Once again, no need to say, but I will say again, NICE REVIEW.
Definitely, the INFOTECH is just a trade fair, "ene la foire computer".

Atleast for those going there by bus, I hope that you enjoyed your journey :P

@Sun
For all intents & purposes, X6 & C6 are the same crap. Buy the X6, it's better.

@Yashvin
Had to wait for 30 mins, both aller & retour. :(

I went to the Infotech today and I wasn't impressed at all! Those 3D glasses were crap! *smh*

Cash and Carry. . . 365 jours li reste meme promotion meme li. . 20%..30%. mais selment so prix reste pareil.mo sire, meme si demain li met 99% discount, prix la pou reste pareil. .

The Emtel babes were UGLY. .

Inf said...

@Yashvin: Not "ene la foire computer". "Ene la foire electronics" I agree. Didn't see a lot of computer parts there.

Emtel girls are over-hyped alright. They were expected this time around. As I said on Yashvin's blog: "Deja vu".

Nice pics!

Hey :

"At least, it’s turned on, better than Courts’ Rs 40k 64MB dead iPad"

Its 64GB Wifi iPad

carrotmadman6 said...

@Ashesh
Look in Courts' pamphlet - it's written 64MB instead of 64GB. :p

Anonymous said...

I read in the papers that the iPad will soon be available at Rs 20-25 000!

carrotmadman6 said...

@Anonymous
I also read that & I guess it's the 16GB Wifi one.

keshav said...

You mentioned that Bada OS is a copycat, a copycat of what?

carrotmadman6 said...

@keshav
Mostly iOS, but I also saw tidbits of Sense UI & Android during the demo.
The Wave hardware is great, but Bada OS isn't. I prefer the Galaxy S. :)

keshav said...

I thought that the Wave and the Galaxy S shared the same DNA, OS-wise. I would buy the Wave but it's kinda overpriced.

carrotmadman6 said...

@keshav
The Wave & Galaxy S look similar because both have TouchWiz UI. But the Galaxy S runs it on top of Android (& it can be replaced). :)
