So here we go... the highly anticipated sequel of National Treasure (review here). Ok, I know that this movie was released last year, but I watched NT only in Feb & as for the NT2, the DVD is releasing on May 20th 2008.

NT2's DVD-rip was released a few weeks ago... but I preferred to wait for an HD-rip. & I was right! Click on the above screenshot. That's a whooping widescreen resolution of 832 x 400! Bitrate is 1466kbps. & the file size? Only a mere 1.4GB! That's the magic of x264! (& great thanks to team m-HD at Warez-bb for ripping it from 720p Blu-Ray release) Enough of warez talk - let's go straight to the review of the 9th highest earning blockbuster of 2007.

Benjamin Gates's (Nicolas Cage) great-great-grandfather Thomas Gates is accused of being the mastermind of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, due to the discovery of a missing page from John Wilkes Booth's (the killer) diary.

To save his family's reputation, Ben decides to investigate the PlayFair Cipher hidden in the page. This leads him to the Statue of Liberty... which reveals the next puzzle - a treasure hunt leading to Cibola - one of the seven Golden Cities. Ben Gates is accompanied by sidekick Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) & girlfriend Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger).

National Treasure 2 is just as exciting as the original one but contains much more action scenes! There are fewer clues, but they are as intriguing as never before. Did you know that there are three Statues of Liberty in the world & that one is found in Luxembourg? I resent the fact that less time has been devoted to the clues but producers don’t allow extended versions of movies (like LOTR). The plot revolves around how the American Civil War was won by hiding the Golden City of Cibola - the El Dorado of America - from the Confederates. You wouldn’t believe where it’s hidden. :)

A sequel for National Treasure 2? Definitely… & I guess the way’s paved for one… remember Page 47 of the Book of Secrets. :P

I hadn’t noticed the update on the Orange.mu FAQ page because of the exams. Here it is:

1.11 Why have we introduced the "fair usage policy"?
We have introduced the Fair Usage Policy in April 2008 to ensure that all our Orange ADSL customers get the best possible and most reliable surfing experience.

Picture a motorway where you should be going fast, say at 90 km/hour. Now picture a few heavy container trucks rolling along the same motorway all day every day. It's obvious you will not be able to drive at optimum speed as you would have to share the road with those trucks.
This is similar to what is happening on our networks: those container trucks are the heavy users on our internet networks. They download very large files 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, leaving less bandwidth for the rest of you. And we think it's unfair that you should not be getting good speeds when you surf the internet because of a small number of our users.

i. How do I know if I am a heavy user?
Are you a big fan of peer-to-peer and continuously download large files? Then there is a great chance that you are a heavy user. For example, if you are an ADSL Home 512K customer and you download over 5,000 music tracks per month or more than 30 movies per month and keep on doing this type of download every month, then you would qualify as a heavy user. This type of download is a large amount by any normal standard of usage.

ii. How will the "fair usage policy" be put into practice?
Your FUP threshold, i.e. the amount of data that you can download will depend on the offer to which you are subscribed to. Monitoring of your downloads will be done on a monthly basis and if you exceed your FUP threshold over a period of 2 consecutive months, you will be subjected to FUP on the third month.
So, for example:
- you exceed the FUP threshold for your package during month 1 and 2
- during month 3, you again exceed your threshold, say on the 21st of month 3
- after the 21st until the end of month 3, you will be subject to speed restrictions
- at the start of month 4, your speed will be back to normal as long as you do not again exceed the FUP threshold
- if you are being speed-restricted quite often, then we will contact you and may advise you to move to another package that is more suited to your download needs

iii. What happens after I have been speed-restricted?
You will be moved back to normal usage the following month but you will be speed-restricted again if you exceed the set threshold. If we find that you are being speed-restricted continuously, we will contact you to propose a package more suited to your needs. Speed restrictions will depend on the package you are subscribed to

iv. What if I need to download large files without being speed restricted?
Then you should move to another package with a higher bandwidth. The fair usage threshold for a My.T 512K is higher than that of My.T 256K, which means you are allowed heavier downloads with My.T 512K than My.T 256K. This is applicable across the board for all My.T and ADSL offers as well.

v. what if I am not a heavy user?
Then you have nothing to worry about. Even if you downloading heavily for one month but not the next, you will not qualify as a heavy user. More than 95% of our subscribers are NOT heavy users.

vi. can I track my internet usage?
Go to My Internet Account on http://www.orange.mu/my-account to check your internet usage online. You will need to enter your ADSL login and password.

Original Fair Usage Policy can be checked out here.

1. The road traffic analogy
Yeah, it’s true that 5% of the long vehicles can block up the whole traffic… except that in Mauritius, there’s no highway. Mauritian Internet (with only SAFE) can’t be considered a highway, nor a main road where you can overtake, but rather the bumpy road through the sugarcane fields! (or as Inf penned it - the small lane that my dog dug near the mango tree!)
There’s no fast lane for supercars & neither there is a crawler lane for long vehicles. There is only a single village road, where even the large numbers of small cars cause traffic jams & where your maximum speed, regardless of any limit, is 10km/h.

2. Implementing the FUP
I don’t know WHY DON’T THEY REVEAL THE CAP LIMITS?!?!?!? The 3 month scheme seems OK, but how can anyone limit their downloads unless they know what’s their limit! I’m strongly suspecting that Orange will implement a flexible limit depending on the traffic usage. They won’t reveal the exact limit so that they can catch you unaware & throttle your connection! Revealing the limits would mean that everyone can play safe by being on the borderline - but without publicly announcing any limits, Orange can freely adjust them to suit their needs without facing any public backlash! What a monopoly!

3. Speed-restriction
That’s indeed a big concern! How are we going to be restricted? A drop by half-speed or will they axe it directly to dial-up?? Another loophole…

4. Tracking your Internet Usage
The site is http://internetaccount.orange.mu/
If your login is like XXXXX@tplus, remove the @tplus & use XXXXX as the username & the password remains the same. Again, no mention about the limits on the site.
WARNING: I’ve compared my usage by NetMeter with the one on the site… & as expected, the usage recorded by Orange is greater (by 50MB average). So be aware - do not trust your meter!

5000 tracks at 5MB per mp3 track = 25GB
30 movies at 700MB per movie = 21GB
So there you go… the limit for 512k is 20GB - which is incredibly low!
& given what section iv. suggests… this means that 256k is 10GB & 128k is 5GB???

Update: Limits revealed!!!
ADSL Home 128k = 10Gb
My.T 256k = 3Gb

(No comments! Evil Orange strikes again!)

A brand new Ferrari, not a new model, but an entirely new line of Ferraris has been unveiled. The Ferrari California (I wonder if California is the codename?) was “leaked” out by Ferrari who’ve released only 3 photos & the statement below:

New Ferrari California revealed: a hugely versatile, innovation-packed GT

Maranello, May 13th 2008 - The first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse's 8-cylinder family which has always been defined by power and performance. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment.

The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. The new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California's 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

As per the traditional Ferrari transaxle layout, the engine, which allows the Ferrari California to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds, will be coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission that boosts the car's performance while enhancing the driving pleasure, improves ride comfort and reduces fuel consumption and emissions (c.310 g/km CO2). The comfort is further enhanced by a new multilink rear suspension system. The Ferrari California is also equipped with the exclusive F1-Trac traction control system which made its debut on the 599 GTB Fiorano and has been further honed to suit the typical driving conditions expected for this new GT. Brembo brakes featuring carbon-ceramic material disks as standard guarantee superbly efficient braking.

In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down.

The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever. The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris International Car Show. However, over the coming weeks, new photographs and further details about it will also be published.

The Ferrari California is a roadster/spyder/convertible. It’s quite the stunner that the numerous spyshots have revealed it to be, but it’s far from being the entry-level supercar that it was rumoured. A V8 generating 7500rpm (a little more than your hard disk) capable of 0-100 in less than 4.0s. By comparison the F599 GTB does 0-100 in 3.7s & the F430 3.5s. But on the California, the engine is at the front!

The California has a folding hard-top, hence the longer body. But with a hard-top, you never worry about the top being blown off! The California has an excellent design (as most Ferraris), has some innovative new technology on-board & has supercar performance. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP-560-4 should expect some serious competition - but I still prefer the LP-560-4! (Here’s the Top Gear review of the LP-560)

No doubt Jeremy Clarkson has some good deal of work to do this summer - GT-R, California, LP-560-4 & now the Audi R8 V12.

Coincidence? The pic below is the Audi’s Futuristic Concept from I, Robot… The future’s today then!

There’s no doubt diesel is here to stay… I wonder if Audi have an H2 concept?

Top Gear News
Top Gear is NOT airing on the 15th June! & Season 11 will only have 6 episodes! :,(
That’s some really bad news… after S10, the expectations were extremely high for S11, but TG have disappointed us with only 6 episodes, including the Japan Special. & the reason behind this is quite obvious - Euro 2008 & Beijing Olympics. I guess, the BBC couldn’t squeeze in TG episodes in between the live broadcasts…

As a consolation here’s a widget with some of Jezza’s most memorable quotes:

France Telecom & subsidiary Orange have issued a statement today that they have signed an exclusive deal with Apple that will allow them to bring the iPhone to Orange subscribers all over the world… including Mauritius.

Update 19.12.2008: iPhone 3G at last in Mauritius - & it sucks!

PARIS - French wireless operator Orange said Friday it has signed a deal with Apple Inc. to sell its iPhone in the Middle East, Africa and several European countries.

France Telecom's Orange said in a one-sentence statement that it will sell the handset in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and African markets later this year.

France Telecom spokesman Bertrand Deronchaine said Orange will be the exclusive iPhone provider in Belgium and Romania, with co-exclusive or non-exclusive deals in other countries. He declined to offer more details about the arrangement.

Orange’s African markets include — in addition to Egypt — the Ivory Coast, Jordan, Cameroon, Botswana, Madagascar, Mali, Senegal, Mauritius, and Réunion.

Via Apple 2.0 at Fortune500 & Yahoo! & Orange.
AAPL-Investors have also already updated their iPhone Tracker to include Mauritius.

After having conquered India, South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Turkey, etc. it was inevitable that the iPhone would finally come to Mauritius through Orange. Yeah, I know the iPhone is already unofficially here in the black market (the clone as well), but you need to jailbreak it - something you’ll need to do in any case if you want to install apps. & what’s more surprising is that Mauritius will get it before Japan, South Korea & Russia! - Japan & South Korea being years ahead of us, they wouldn’t need such a vintage product.

But there are some BIG questions that are still unclear… Will the iPhone be an Orange exclusivity or will it come unlocked? & how to activate it - remember that you need to log onto iTunes to be able to activate it via Internet. & what about the price??
Well, just forget these for a while - what matters is that the IPHONE IS COMING TO MAURITIUS!!!

No, but wait… it’s not the current iPhone, but iPhone 2.0 featuring 3G! The tech blogs are awash with rumours all pointing towards the impending release of 3G iPhone. So stay tuned for the 9th of June when Steve Jobs will fish out a brand new gadget from his back pocket.

Actually, very few people know what’s on the 3G iPhone… blame it on Apple’s obsession with secrecy!
Predictions for iPhone 2.0
- 3G (UMTS & HSDPA???)
- A-GPS
- 32GB flash storage
- 720x480 resolution?
- App support (available through App Store)
- Better camera with video recording (3MP?)
- Video conferencing (aka video call)
- Flash support
- Shiny black back?

Not bad, ya? But the most impressive is indeed the Visitor Count! Passed the 100K milestone last week!

Traffic Details

Traffic has also increased steadily, up to a maximum of 986 Pageloads (when Anti-Orange sentiment was high last month)!

My first post was Blog is now Online, now changed to About Me. Everybody starts off as a noob & so did I with a post asking “How do you like this blog?” - really stupid!
Nevertheless, blogging was an incredible experience - getting to explore the different blogs, tried blog monetization, learnt a bit of CSS & most importantly I made new friends (at the mbb). Special mention to all commenters as well, without whom this blog wouldn’t have lasted long!
Usually, a Blogversary calls for celebration - changing the look of your blog, but with the exams on my head, I’ll look into that later. I know I’ll have to change the template, coz it’s getting very messy! :)

& unfortunately, there’s no cake left from the Blog Birthday Party… The dog ate it! LOL

YEAH! MANCHESTER UNITED ARE CHAMPIONS!!!!

Manchester United’s 0-2 away win at Wigan confirmed United’s supremacy over the English Premier League as they won their 17th Premiership title!

The game wasn’t as lively as expected, with both teams playing possession football. The turning point of the match came as Rooney was brought down (33rd min) & a penalty was rightly awarded!

Ronaldo calmly slotted in home the crucial goal, making him the EPL’s top scorer at 31 goals!

Wigan pressed on in the second half, with United solidly defending. A draw would mean disaster as Chelsea were leading 1-0 against Bolton! Wigan’s goalkeeper Chris Kirkland parried off some good shots from Tevez & Rooney. Ryan Giggs came in for Ji Sung Park, equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s record 758 appearances for United.

& at the 80th minute, Ryan Giggs experience paid off as he held his calm against the two incoming defenders & scored his 10th goal of the season, finally promising Man United the championship!

As for Chelsea… well, they were held 1-1 (at HOME!) by Bolton. So United have won the EPL fair & square! No need to resort to any goal difference! :P

LONG LIVE MANCHESTER UNITED!

& don’t forget… there’s the Champions League final next week! Chelsea are bloodthirsty for revenge… while United hope to accomplish another historic double!

PS: I’ve reverted back to full RSS Feeds… because Google was boycotting me - none of posts were appearing on the search results, causing my traffic to drop by half! So that’s why I’ve switched to full feeds & submitted my blog for reconsideration. But I don’t think it’s because of the summary feeds… more likely, someone blacklisted my blog with Google. & I think it’s ~censored~ Apple!

Rapidshare.com blocked by Orange
At around 11pm last night (5 May 2008), RS.com stopped responding. All requests were being timed out.

RS blocked by Orange Mauritius
Today, same problem. Rapidshare.com wouldn't load at all.
I switched from OpenDNS to the local DNS, but it didn't work. I then tried it via a proxy - Rapidshare.com was working. I suspected something was wrong on my side as there were no reports of Rapidshare being down elsewhere.

I pinged Rapidshare.com... & the server responded perfectly. With a sinking feeling, I realised what was happening! I had dreaded it but I never imagined it happening - certainly not with the FUP being implemented - Orange wouldn't need to go that far...
Just one last confirmation. I went on DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com & tried Rapidshare.com

No way!

Orange Mauritius ISP is blocking RAPIDSHARE.COM!!!

If the Fair Usage Policy was a stab in the back, then Orange's decision to block RS.com is like being sent to the guillotine.

Here's a simple analogy.
Highway blocked?
As everyone knows, the M1 highway going through Port Louis is the busiest road in Mauritius. Half of the day, the M1 is paralysed by traffic jams. So one day, the Gov decides to get rid of all traffic jams by just closing down the M1. No more highway, no traffic jams - the miracle solution!
This is exactly what Orange is doing - by blocking the websites people use the most! Orange first started by limiting your traffic usage with the FUP (with everyone still being kept in the dark), & now they’ve just blocked the most popular file-hoster in the world.

Possible targets on Orange's Blacklist Blocklist
What next?
- YouTube (Mauritian people watch toooo many videos & that's unhealthy for them – make them watch MBC instead)
- Facebook (Someone created a group called Orange sucks & that's heresy - can't be tolerated!)
- Hi5 (Can't let everyone chat online - block them & they'll use Orange mobile instead)
- Wikipedia (There's a fake wiki about Orange blocking Wikipedia)
- Megaupload (Cannot not block MU while blocking RS.com)
- Mediafire, FileFactory, Megashares, RS.de & 4shared? (5 more for the road...)
- themediaguru.blogspot.com (That guy’s flaming the cash-cows against Orange - better block him)

& no, I’m not joking. What Orange is doing is not traffic management but Internet Censorship. Who knows tomorrow, Orange may become the Great Firewall of Mauritius - restricting your Internet connection speed… & also restricting access to information on the Internet!

SAFE is being overwhelmed - that is indeed a fact. But Orange has chosen the worst possible way to counter the lack of bandwidth by “policing” Internet access. Instead of investing on increasing network capacity, they are trying to restraint it (until the arrival of the EASSY?). Why not invest into more fibre optic links? Why not implement island-wide FTTH? Lack of vision, perhaps? Or are FT puppets vetoing it? (No doubt, they’d want to get back those millions spent in the rebranding)

RS = RIP
Orange has decided to restrict access to RS.com without informing any of the users. Such a restriction may be completely illegal (remember the Facebook episode?). The whole point of blocking Rapidshare is that there’s this myth that file sharing takes up most of the bandwidth in Mauritius. According to this Wired.com report, ISPs never release their network usage stats & most studies have shown that P2P usage consists only 30% of the web traffic.
Albeit Rapidshare isn’t P2P & that Mauritius’ traffic pattern can’t be compared with the US - but it’s definite that the most traffic is used by gamers & normal web browsing & downloading - Web 2.0 & video-sharing sites like YouTube easily consume half of that traffic. Rapidshare & other file-hosters play a minimal role in there. I agree Rapidshare hosts unauthorised content, but the majority are legal downloads!!! Why Rapidshare is so popular is because it has the fastest upload & download speeds - even as a free user! What will happen to Rapidshare premium users? Will Orange refund their accounts, since they cannot access it anymore?

RS Proxies
Everyone knows Orange uses package headers to shape your torrents, so you had to encrypt it or switch to file-hosting. But now with Rapidshare.com gone… should we start living on proxies? If you check the Alexa Mauritius Top 100 sites, Rapidshare.com comes at 8th place… behind YouTube & the social networks. Will Orange block these sites as well because of their high traffic usage? That’s completely irrational! Without releasing any traffic pattern figures, Orange may well be blowing up the bandwidth problem out of proportions so that they can permanently limit our traffic?!?!

Internet Censorship in Mauritius
We must not allow Orange to create a precedent, so that in the future, our basic human rights of Liberty & Freedom of Expression won’t be at stake. No one wants Mauritius to be featured as one of the “enemies of the Internet” on a Wikipedia page like the one on Internet Censorship. If we want to become a cyber-island, we should promote Internet freedom instead of stifling it. Except that with Orange, it seems we are going back in time to the Middle Ages of dial-up. Not only is the world leaving us behind… but we are running backwards!

The Mauritian Internet Crisis
We are currently facing an energy crisis, a food crisis & high inflation - & now an INTERNET CRISIS!
Act now before it’s too late!!! Let’s say NO to ORANGE! (Orange can’t bribe us as they bribed MT employees with free mobile phones!)
I’m currently working on a petition, which should (hopefully) make Orange reconsider its decision. Let’s fight Orange!

PS: Orange has managed to bring me out of my 2-week blogging exile (coz of exams), but I’m really busy. I need to weight my words well before I publish the demands for the petition (by Friday perhaps), so stay tuned. Do comment!
Note about FTTH: There are reports that Orange has begun testing FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) in Quatre-Bornes & that some businesses have already been connected! Can anyone confirm this?

Blog Reactions:
GeekScribes - Rapidshare.com DOWN in Mauritius only?
Tushal - Orange V/s Rapidshare

UPDATE:
Wednesday 7 May 2008 - 10:30 AM
Rapidshare.com is back up again... Has Orange removed the http blocking? (Let's wait & see...)

UPDATE 2:
Yes, Rapidshare.com is definitely up & running again! &... it wasn't because of server problems or whatsoever... ORANGE DID BLOCK RAPIDSHARE.COM!!!
I knew there was something wrong when it was clear that only Mauritius was having such problems. It's now confirmed that the restriction started 2-3 days ago, not affecting all users at once - since it was being blocked region-wise. & the only one who can do that is your ISP, i.e. Orange.
But Orange had to stop CENSORING Rapidshare today when they were flooded by complaints from not only home users but important business users as well. & at 10:30 AM, all was well! :)
