While this may not seem any awe-inspiring news at first sight... if you consider that Akamai hosts websites like Microsoft, Apple, Intel & Adobe, then this is a revolution for our CyberTowerIsland. It was a week ago that My.T users reported on Avinash Meetoo's blog that they were getting great speeds when downloading updates from Microsoft & Apple. Akamai is one the largest CDN in the world, having servers in more than 70 countries. How Akamai works – Read more here. Actually it's been more than a month that Akamai have setup their servers in Mauritius. As for the location of the datacentre, it's quite probable that it's not at Albion, but rather at Ebene... So what does this mean for you? If you've got ADSL, nothing. But if you have My.T, you will now be getting full 2Mbps speed on these websites! (Download speed will be around 200-250KB/s) FUP? The Microsoft, Apple & Adobe sites aren't fully mirrored yet - only the download servers so far. Downloading Windows Updates, Apple Updates & software trials should be lightning fast! & when Orange will launch iPhone, downloading from iTunes Store (Mauritius) would be much easier! :) As for interesting content, try Apple Movie Trailers, MTV Music Vids & Nasa Multimedia. Tip: Don't use OpenDNS!!! Use default IP settings, i.e. MT's DNS so that you'll be automatically redirected to local Akamai servers. :) Update 2:
Then Avinash did some investigation on http://www.intel.com/ & the IP was revealed to be 196.27.66.8 & 196.27.66.9 - Mauritian IPs! 20% of the world's Internet traffic is delivered over the Akamai platform.
Check this Visualizing Global Web Performance
The actual speed should be between 1.5 to 1.8Mbps depending on your geographical location - but having a megabit connection is more than enough!!
Although this should be a local connection, Orange will still count it as they monitor your whole traffic usage.
Actually it's very easy to know which sites have a Mauritian IP. Just use the Flagfox extension (thanks to Who? for the tip!).

flagfox is very interesting/useful. for example i found out that some 'mauritian website' are NOT in Mauritius. and the .mu can be use even for stuff that don't conserve Mauritius. example http://www.annievilleneuve.mu
she ain't got anything to do with Mauritius (I like her songs) see where its base? :)
cya.
@who?
Thanks for the link! :)
Yeah, I've seen some sites using .mu - & I always wonder why - .mu isn't the cheapest available... :)
Because mu is not sold by mauritian authorities. It is a niche tld. I forgot the country which owns it. :)
@Neelesh
According to Wiki, .mu is owned by Internet Direct Ltd & as far as I know ICTA hasn't got hold of it yet.
& yeah, .mu also stands for music or museum, that's why some bands are using it. :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mu
well as you can see i was downloading adobe @ 195 kb/s http://yasir03.online.fr/?p=59
Downloading on adobe @ 215kbps
microsoft@275kbps

@carrotmadman6..
thaanks loads man.. i am starting to leech ur bandwidth ! hahahhaha lolzzz :))
can someone update me on the difference on speed only between my-t 512 and adsl 512?
thanks
@dragon
There is no speed difference between My.T 512 & ADSL 512 for international connections.
But for local connections (local servers like Akamai & Google as from next month), you'll be getting only 512k with ADSL 512k & 2Mbps with My.T.
:)
I am a bit outdated but why is Orange using different "routes" for its services?
And because of Akamai caching websites in Mauritius, any change in speed for MT's other services (internet everwhere) and competitors?
@dragon
It's because ADSL & My.T use 2 different technologies - My.T uses ADSL2, which allows a bandwidth of up to 4Mbps (2Mbps is reserved for IPTV).
For MT's other services & competitors, it depends on how they access the local servers.
For e.g., you may get full 1.8Mbps on Emtel HSDPA, but only 384kbps on Emtel 3G.
:)
Hi,
You can add youtube.com
yep!!
cya
Youtube?
So, all of Youtube is cached huh?
@Anonymous
Not all of YouTube, only the most popular & most viewed videos in Mauritius. :)
Yep.
and you can watch the HD version, the 480p or the 720p or even 1080p where available.
Here comes youtube HD finally.
cya
I did some test and it appears that only 480p version of the videos are cached.
Too bad for hulu it ain't of any use for us.
A Quand Rapidshare ! lol ou megavideo!
Hi carrotmadman6.
"Update 3:
Google removed their servers in mauritius."
Yes its been a few days since absolutely no youtube videos are delivering high speed. You can test for yourself (by watching the most viewed videos) or maybe you already have. Or is it a myt 1mbps problem. Give some feedback please.
@Anonymous
Well, I just download a video at over 200kB/s...
Check your DNS settings or blame My.T. :)
@Anonymous
By the way, if you want to get full speed on a video... Load the video for a few seconds & then refresh the page. It'll be downloaded from the local cache the 2nd time. ;)
My DNS settings are set to automatic, as usual. I always do as you already said, it didn't work since Thursday. Its a myt 1Mbps problem then, not a 512K. You have a 512k right?
@Anonymous
Yeah, 512k.
Hello carrot. I just connected to a 512K livebox and tested a youtube video, and the speed was good. Its a 1Mbps problem or less probably that crappy livebox.
I remembered you were very angry about not being upgraded to the 1Mbps, and I can give you other reasons why you should be happy having stayed on 512K:
Youtube local cache doesn't work anymore on the 1Mbps. Not only youtube is slow, but with other download sites during the day I was getting 20-30KB/second. And downloading the same files with a 512K livebox I was getting the full 64KB/sec. Seems that too many people have subscribed to the 1Mbps package. Remember in December 2009, download speed was very crap because too many student were at home using internet.
@Anonymous
I can confirm that friends with 1Mbps cannot access the local Google cache.
However, all with 512k can. Weird. I'm tempted to think MT has something to do with this... :S
Youtube been lagging for me also, but when i download the video via idm i get 200 KB/s +.
btw i can't access warez-bb without a proxy and mail.live.com is taking ages to load!
anyone with the same problems?
I was waiting a few days to ask you to do an investigation for me about the youtube problem, but you already did it. Thank you.
Just tested mail.live.com, its OK, and for warez-bb, its not loading - either the site itself banned mauritian IPs or ICTA blocked it.
For youtube I don't even get 128KB/sec while loading the video, not even 64KB/sec, but 4, 5, sometimes 6KB/sec.
@jens @Anonymous
Warez-bb was working for me yesterday. Today, there seems to be a downtime. Will wait for a few hours to see if it's back.
Have you noticed some websites (google, wikipedia) not loading or taking a lot of time to load on firefox, and having to reload the page for it to load? I'm not 100% sure if its IE9, but since I uninstalled that crap seems that everything's working fine. I've never been an IE user anyway. Have you installed IE9 and getting same problem?
@Anonymous
No, I don't have that problem with Firefox, but with Chrome. Several pages have to loaded twice.
Yes, I have IE9 installed, but I don't think the problem is related to IE?
Well I had that problem with both firefox and chrome for some days now until today as I uninstalled IE9 and its update that came with it.
Go to: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, then View installed updates. And before removing the update that came with it, can you copy and paste the support link here that came with it, just to see what this update did.
Try doing the same, and then you give me some feedback. You don't use IE9, don't you?
If for you its not IE9, I suppose you're tempted to say that orange is the problem?
@Anonymous
There wasn't any update with the IE9 I installed.
Will try this solution if ever this reloading problem arises again.
The update name starts with "KB" accompanied with a lot numbers.
If you still get that reloading problem or manage to solve it, post a comment here.
I guess I was just lucky yesterday after uninstalling IE to then have pages loaded normally. The problem is still happening on certain pages.
You think its orange the culprit?
@Anonymous
Possibly. With Orange we can expect anything.
Recently, Orange had problems with the LION cable - so maybe the packets are lost when routed through LION?
does this work on MYt 1mps
@Anonymous
Yes.
