Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
Adobe's Flashplayer has been the backbone of the Web 2.0 revolution... powering almost every Web App on the Internet. But Adobe itself was quite distanced by its competitors - Google, Microsoft & Yahoo & many other startups - by being virtually absent from the Web.
But fortunately, Adobe recognised that the future of software lies on the Web & reacted promptly to Flash rival Silverlight.
Adobe has since acquired Buzzword (the best online word processsor - better than GoogleDocs) & launched Air (allows Web Apps to run on your desktop offline & online).

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
After Adobe Premiere Express was launched last year, it was widely expected that an online version of Photoshop would be released... & here it is - Adobe PhotoShop Express!

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
First step first - you need to register. Go to the website & register.

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
After registering you'll be required to activate your account & you'll be able to use Photoshop Express.

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
Photoshop Express (like most Web Apps) takes quite a while to load, especially if you have a slow connection.

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
I couldn't upload a file bigger than 100kb (blame my connection), because it kept getting stuck. So i had to satisfy myself with the smallest pic on my desktop (which was a pic of the Top Gear trio).

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
Well... instead of the ubiquitous Photoshop interface, what you get is something you'd see in a free photo editor tool like Picasa. No layers, no lasso, no gradient... Only a few photo editing tools regrouped into Basics(Crop & Rotate, Auto Correct, Exposure, Red-Eye Removal, Touchup & Saturation), Tuning(White Balance, Highlight, Fill Light, Sharpen & Soft Focus) and Effects(Pop Color, Hue, Black & White, Tint, Sketch, Distort).

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
I tried out the Pop Color, which allows you to change the colour of a particular colour channel. That’s the most interesting feature you’d get in Photoshop Express...

The lack of features & the incredibly slow speed of the app quickly bored me off. I've never liked Web Apps because of their slow processing... (Ok, i'm biased because of my slow connection).
Adobe Photoshop Express is a utter disappointment... It's not even deemed to be named Photoshop - Adobe Image Tools or Adobe Image Enhancement Editor would have been better.

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta
I doubt you would, but if you want to learn how to use Photoshop Express, try this video tutorial site.

If you are looking for something more than the Photoshop Express, try out these other online photo editors:
- Splashup
- Fotoflexer
- Aviary Phoenix - ultra-exclusive beta… I just got in, review coming up soon.

The Mauritius Blog Brethren has been mentioned on Le Mauricien (Saturday 15th April) along with an article on Mauritian bloggers. Famous Mauritian bloggers Jevin, Morinn & Keli were also interviewed along with the no-longer-unknown-mysterious MBB Founder!
Here’s the full transcript:

INTERNET Blogueurs

MTML Azu
After more than a year… MTML (Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited) have finally launched their wireless broadband service… Azu! But no need to get over-excited. As most early-adopters of “broadband” connections in Mauritius already know (Nomad, Emtel, My.T), it’s best to wait a few months (for problems to surface) before jumping in the fray!

MTML Dialup Tariffs
But considering their previous attempts at the high-speed dialup (144kbps) with their extremely competitive prices for a niche market of 5h-per-month Internet users, we can expect MTML to provide similar offers like MT & perhaps at a lower price.

Whatever be the case, they should abstain from providing 512kbps connections at Rs. 500 & then capping it at 5GB (like Emtel) or use a best-effort service (like My.T). I wouldn’t mind capping a 512k connection at 50GB…
& concerning Azu’s speed, that seems to be a major problem since MTML would be using CDMA2000-EVDO, which provides a maximum (theoretic) downlink speed of 2.4Mbps. Users should not expect great speeds, especially when the network becomes saturated…
For the time being, only the ads have cropped up, no tariff yet… But as soon as they’re out, I’ll post it here.

Update:
The cat's out of the bag! Yes, the internet speed IS 2.4Mbps!!!! No, but wait... the wireless modem is (for the time being) only available as a PCMCIA add-on for laptops... for the price of Rs. 3999+VAT. & of course... surfing at 2.4Mbps unlimited would have been heaven... but unfortunately Azu is capped & there are packages for the amount of data used each month. & yeah, if you exceed it, you need to pay PER MB! :(

Update 2:
The cat's out of the bag (again)! MTML have updated their website with more information on Azu. More info here.

The tariffs have been revealed as well (check here). Azu is limited to 1Gb, 2Gb & 5Gb plans, with the excess being charged at Rs 0.80/Mb (Rs 819/Gb). These seems perfectly suited for users who want high speeds & have low usage. But the most interesting thing is that the unlimited connection of a max of 2.4Mbps is available unlimited at only... Rs 2199!!! That's great news for all ADSL users that are rich enough to pay themselves the 1Mbps luxury at Rs 6000 or the über-rich who have 2Mbps at Rs 10,500 - they can now have a faster connection at a lesser price of only Rs 2200! Everyone who were thinking of moving to ADSL Business because of the FUP, can now ditch Orange for ever! Yay! Long Live MTML!

But wait, as with every product, there's still a catch. MTML uses EVDO to provide the 2.4Mbps speed.... & the EVDO coverage is only in Port Louis & the Plaine Wilhems. Everyone not living in these areas will get 144kbps - imagine paying Rs 2200 for 144kps (when will they stop the rural discrimination - villagers have right to Internet Access as well!). Azu broadband is only available as a PCMCIA modem for laptops only - no USB modem in sight yet... & modem is priced at Rs 4000.
I've checked the modem manual as well... & it asks you to uninstall a Microsoft hotfix if you get an error (huh?). Download the Application Form here & the Modem Manual here.
One thing we shouldn't forget - that 2.4Mbps isn't permanent! Till when will MTML be able to sustain such a speed with increasing users & in the end, the network load may prove too heavy for them... & they may decide to cap the unlimited?

Update 3:
Yay! USB Modem available for Rs 5000! :D
But wait!!! Check this review by L'Express! Is MTML going the Nomad way? There seems to be connection problems with the service... Read on the article.

Nokia Tube

Nokia Tube
Nokia launching a YouTube competitor? Nopes… it’s the just the codename for Nokia’s S60-powered touchscreen smartphone.

Nokia Tube
The folks over at Symbianfreak.com have leaked some titbits about Nokia’s upcoming “response” to Apple’s iPhone. The Tube is NOT an Nseries - but more like a mid-range device while the flagship iPhone-killer will ship “shortly after.” If the first S60 Touch device is like this… I can’t imagine what’s meant by higher-specs than this – multi-touch?

- 5th Generation S60 Touch
- High Resolution 16:9 screen between 3” & 3.5”
- Camera better than that on the iPhone with Autofocus, but not like that on Nseries - most probably a 3.15MP
- Quad Band – GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA
- Bluetooth, WLAN, uPnP
- GPS with geotagging
- NO multi-touch, but stylus-based & featuring haptics feedback - sort of virtual buttons.
- Revised icons? (Not pretty-looking though!)
- similar size to N73, but a bit wider
- available in the 1st quarter of 2009
- XpressMedia & front camera (thanks to modified pic below from Engadget)

Orange Mauritius Billboard

Update 19.12.2008: iPhone 3G at last in Mauritius - & it sucks!
Edit: Orange is here & here's the followup to this post: Mauritius welcomes Orange.
& if you want the real RANT POST, here it is: Orange ADSL’s Fair Usage Policy is a stab in the back!

Orange is finally here...
I was expecting the transformation from Cellplus to Orange since quite a long time, but now it has taken place... let's see what happens next.

RIP Cellplus
Ladies & Gentlemen, please keep a minute of silence to commemorate the demise of one of our nation's most reliable & most famous brands - Cellplus.

Cellplus Mauritius
With over 500k subscribers, Cellplus was the leading mobile network, blending into our daily lives with services like Complis, Get2Net, SmsChat, Radiovision, MatinalSa… Rest in Peace Cellplus…

Orange Mauritius Logo
What to expect?
- Getting ORANGE instead of CELLPLUS-MRU in your network id.
- Getting an Orange sticker on your phone purchased from Cellplus Orange.
- Having your phone support being in French only (no Kreol plz).
- Cellplus -> Orange
- Complis -> Forfait Orange Zap? Mobicarte?
- Wanadoo ADSL -> Orange ADSL
- My.T -> Orange Livebox?
- Cellplus portal -> Orange World
- myt.mu -> Orange.mu
- Being labelled as one more addition to the long list of African Orange operators aka Orange Ile Maurice (full list on Wiki)
Already orange.mu redirects to servihoo.com...

Orange Livebox Mauritius
But unfortunately, you will obviously not be getting those lucrative 8Mbps Mega Deals!

According to l'Express, Mauritius Telecom is paying up to 3% of their annual turnover to be able to use the Orange name & services.
I obviously don't see the logic in there... Orange isn't really a big brand as it is being overhyped. Why should MT pay any royalty fee? Instead Orange should be paying MT!
For example, Microsoft has a stake in Facebook. If tomorrow, they want to change the name to Microsoft Facebook, it's MS who should be paying Facebook & not the other way round.
But seeing that France Telecom has 40% of control upon MT, expect more abuse of power in the future.

Orange iPhone Mauritius
& again according to L'Express, the "hidden agenda" behind such a deal is to make Apple's iPhone available in Mauritius since Orange is the official distributor of iPhone in France. Sounds interesting, but it's still a lame April Fool joke...
The Apple-iTunes-iPhone-Network symbiosis is so complex that it would be totally unfeasible in Mauritius. The iPhone is a premium product for a niche market (with equally premium network rates!) It won't work in Mauritius.
Check out Orange’s iPhone site: iphone.orange.fr

Orange iPhone Mauritius Ad
& there's even an iPhone Orange Ad flaunting off Mauritius...

Orange iPhone Mauritius Vacoas Ad
& Vacoas?!?

The Ad:

Emtel - The Only Mauritian Network
In any case, the Cellplus to Orange transition will highly damage the national recognition of the brand... meaning Emtel can seize the opportunity to cash on its Mauritian identity.
Btw, Emtel have revamped their site… check it out: emtel-ltd.com

Orange FTTH
While the demised Cellplus was reputed for its reliable network, Emtel is the most innovative company (3G, Hsdpa, ePin, Easy Transfer). However, with Orange, the competition will be tougher. Newer services & newer "forfaits" will be introduced - unlimited calls & sms? Newer adsl options? FTTH? Mobile package deals?
Remember Cellplus used to sell those Sagem phones… Orange as well will sell mobile phones at subsidised prices under contract deals.

Are we witnessing the beginning of the end of a national symbol or the start of a new era of "technologie Française?" Only time will tell...
Hint: Orange UK is considered the worst ISP in UK (via Wiki).

Boycott Orange or else support it... Here's a few goodies:

Say No to Orange badge!

Stop Orange - Go Green
Tired of Orange? Go Green!

PS: Cellplus Orange will be launching their ePin competitor very soon...

Updates:
Here's the preview clip annoucing the launch of Orange on the 17th...

All support numbers for mobile & internet has been changed to 8900.

UPDATE 2:
Follow-up to this post:
Mauritius welcomes Orange...
All updates will henceforth be on this post.

Blogger in Draft

I’ve just noticed the new “Add a Gadget” function on Blogger in Draft.

Add a Gadget - Basic
Well, it turned out it was more than just another new function… the whole “Add a Page Element” feature has been revamped into the more stylish (& better-looking) Add a Gadget. But rest assured, your Basic Page Elements features are still there - that's the first thing that comes up in the Basic Tab.
However, there are quite a few new Gadgets as well - Blog List (feed of your blogroll), Slideshow, Subscription Links & Search Box.

Add a Gadget - Most Popular
Nevertheless, the most interesting thing about this new function is the availability of over 40,357 gadgets!!! Which means that you no longer need to search for widgets to add to your blog anymore – everything is here & it’s listed by categories (News, Tools, Technology, etc.).

Add a Gadget - Your Own
& you can even add your own Gadgets as well…

Add a Gadget - Featured
Check it out now on Blogger in Draft. & actually, this should have been labelled widgets instead of Gadgets, because Gadgets are more synonymous with Windows Sidebar Gadgets. (& most of the gadgets seems to have been lifted off from iGoogle’s Gadgets database!)

Some of the gadgets on BloggerBuster...

With the BBC having snagged the F1 2009 Season broadcast rights, the inevitable question of who will present the show crops up… & obviously, if you are speaking of anything dealing by far with cars, then that’s Top Gear territory.

According to this report by TimesOnline, it's Richard Hammond (Hamster) that is hot favourite to become BBC’s F1 commentator. Actually, the BBC is looking to revamping the entire F1 show by giving it a new look… & why not with Team Top Gear.

Top Gear having more viewers than F1 should re-spark interest into the automotive sport, because Hamster won’t be doing the commentary alone… Jeremy Clarkson & James May won’t refrain from doing inside specials…

& they do indeed have quite a lot of racing “experience.”

A copsupercar - How hard can it be?
How would you like to transform this…

Into this:

Well, bet it on Top Gear to give a shot at building a copsupercar for the next season of Top Gear.

Sun columnist Jeremy Clarkson and the gang plan to build a super patrol car to help cops crack down on crime.

Explaining what Jezza, James May and Richard Hammond have in mind, a source said: “We looked at cops’ cars and they don’t feel equipped enough for the job.

“The Top Gear lads have got some ideas so we’re going to put them to the test in the new series.

“It won’t exactly be Robocop, but it will be better than PC Plod’s Pandas.”
